Every day, millions of dollars are taken, seized in every state and handed over to a federal agency to start forfeiture proceedings. The government admits that the majority of these items would be returned if the owner just tried, but most people don’t. They just give up because they are afraid of the process and confused by the paperwork. In 2019 alone, the US government took in more than $6.7 billion. That’s billion with a B. And where does that money go? Right back into the pockets of the law enforcement agency that took it. They use it to pay for overtime and nice, big bonuses that we never hear about.
